A tourist in Rome has delivered a serious cautionary message to other travelers heading to the Italian capital following a harrowing incident during her vacation. Caroline Jansson took to TikTok to share her ordeal of being “deprived of all her personal possessions” and advised fellow visitors to be vigilant of their surroundings.
In a video, she recounted her conversation with the police who informed her that thieves specifically target tourists. She emphasized the need for heightened awareness, especially for those with rental cars, as a significant number of people had reported luggage theft directly from their hired vehicles.
Sharing anecdotes, Caroline mentioned a woman who had her handbag stolen while taking a picture, and a man who lost his wallet and passport from his grasp. She urged individuals to stay vigilant, watch out for each other, and safeguard their belongings, as everything they had brought for the trip was now gone.
Caroline disclosed the loss of valuables, including an iPad and two laptops, in the European hotspot. Fortunately, she managed to track down one of the laptops, a MacBook, inside a stolen bag, although it was abandoned in a ditch without the rest of her belongings.
Expressing her intent to cooperate with the authorities, Caroline appealed to her followers to assist in locating her luggage if they happened to be in Rome.
Following her disclosure, another traveler shared their theft encounter at a Rome train station, where they were fortunate to have their belongings returned by an observant officer. Additionally, a second individual recounted a distressing incident of robbery in a supposedly secure car park, where valuable items were stolen while the police showed little interest.
Another TikTok user cautioned about a pickpocketing attempt on a crowded bus in Rome, advising caution and close supervision of personal belongings.
In the UK government’s foreign travel advice section, recommendations are provided for visitors to Rome. The guidance highlights the prevalence of thefts from parked cars, particularly in popular areas like the Colosseum, Ostia, Milan, and Pisa, as well as coastal regions, towns, and motorway service stations. Travelers are advised against leaving luggage unattended in vehicles as thieves may use various tactics to distract or deceive individuals.
