WhatsApp is making a significant improvement by introducing unique usernames to address the inconvenience of sharing phone numbers for communication. This change comes after a long wait, offering users the option to share usernames instead of personal phone numbers.
The decision to implement usernames stems from the acknowledgment that sharing phone numbers can sometimes feel like a significant step, especially when connecting with new acquaintances, classmates, neighbors, or group members. The new feature aims to provide a more private and flexible chatting experience for users.
In addition to enhancing individual chats, the update will also elevate the privacy of group conversations. Users engaging in community discussions or social group chats can now participate without immediately disclosing their phone numbers to unfamiliar contacts.
WhatsApp has announced that users can now reserve their preferred usernames in advance of the full rollout. Given the platform’s vast user base, securing desired usernames promptly is advisable to avoid missing out on preferred choices.
To reserve a username, users must update their WhatsApp to the latest version and navigate to Settings > Account > Username. The rollout of this feature will occur gradually over the upcoming months, with WhatsApp notifying users when usernames become available in their respective regions.
