A woman facing trial for allegedly stalking Madeleine McCann’s family claimed to be the missing girl and told Gerry McCann, “I will prove my point with or without your help.” The Leicester Crown Court heard a recording of this message during the proceedings. The accused, Wandelt, 24, from Lubin, Poland, and Karen Spragg, 61, from Cardiff, are both charged with stalking the McCann family.
Gerry McCann received a call from Wandelt, who later left a voicemail asserting her belief that she is Madeleine and her determination to find her biological family. Wandelt is accused of sending various forms of communication to the McCanns, including letters, calls, voicemails, WhatsApp messages, and Instagram messages to Madeleine’s siblings, Amelie and Sean.
The court was informed that Wandelt conducted a prolonged harassment campaign over two and a half years, involving multiple contacts with the family, including up to 60 calls to Kate McCann in a single day. Detective Mark Draycott, part of Scotland Yard’s Operation Grange investigation into the Madeleine McCann case, testified that Wandelt contacted him in June 2022.
During the trial, a recording was played where an officer informed Wandelt that there was no evidence to support her claim of being Madeleine. Meanwhile, Spragg is charged with one count of stalking causing serious distress between June 2022 and February 2025. She became emotional during the court proceedings when voicemails left by Wandelt to Kate were played.
