Nearly 60,000 knives have been confiscated from public circulation since July of the previous year, according to the most recent statistics.
Advocates have hailed this as a significant milestone, emphasizing that authorities are making progress towards their goal of reducing knife-related offenses by half over the course of ten years.
Official figures from the Home Office reveal that 7,512 knives and other weapons were voluntarily surrendered during a dedicated summer initiative. This is in addition to the 47,795 instances of surrender involving zombie-style knives and machetes in the previous year.
The Border Force agency has intercepted 3,334 knives, while operations under the County Lines Programme led to the recovery of 618 blades.
Sandra Campbell, the leader of the Word 4 Weapons campaign group, highlighted the importance of each surrendered weapon, stating that it symbolizes a potential tragedy averted in local communities.
In response to the ongoing issue of knife crime, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood emphasized the commitment of the government to combat this problem. Mahmood expressed determination to continue the fight until the target of reducing knife crime by half is achieved, stressing the relentless pursuit of this objective.
Recent crime data indicated a 5% decrease in knife-related offenses within a year, with 51,527 incidents recorded in the 12 months leading up to June, compared to 54,215 in the previous year.
During the same period, there was an 18% decline in knife-related homicides. The Labour party has pledged to halve such crimes within a decade.
Patrick Green, the CEO of the Ben Kinsella Trust established in memory of Ben Kinsella, a victim of a fatal stabbing in 2008, commended the latest statistics. Green underscored the significance of removing large and dangerous weapons, particularly ninja swords, as a vital step towards enhancing street safety and safeguarding young lives from unnecessary violence.
Faron Paul, an advocate who founded FazAmnesty, an initiative focused on reducing knife crime through the installation of knife bins and mentorship programs, highlighted the collective efforts that led to the removal of thousands of weapons from public circulation. This collaborative approach, supported by local authorities and charitable organizations, demonstrated the effectiveness of joint action.
Paul expressed confidence in the ability to achieve a 50% reduction in knife crime over the next decade. Additionally, a ban on ninja swords, known as Ronan’s Law in memory of the late Ronan Kanda, took effect on August 1. Prior to its implementation, surrender bins and a mobile ban were deployed in various locations, including parts of London, Manchester, and the West Midlands.
Pooja, Ronan’s mother, acknowledged the tangible progress being made in enhancing safety for young individuals, expressing gratitude towards the government for implementing substantial changes.
Proposed measures in the Crime and Policing Bill currently under parliamentary review aim to reinforce age verification procedures for online knife sales and deliveries. Furthermore, tech industry leaders will face stringent penalties for hosting illicit knife-related content online.
