“Longest-Waiting Dog in UK Still Seeking Forever Home”

After eight years of waiting for a permanent home, Barney, a 10-year-old crossbreed, still longs for a human companion to care for him. His 3,000-day stay at the Dog’s Trust Merseyside makes him the dog in the UK who has waited the longest for a forever home.

The rise in the number of dogs struggling to find homes has reached unprecedented levels, with the RSPCA currently caring for a record-high of 1,646 dogs, double the number from July 2020. To address this issue, the charity is urging potential owners in South East England to consider adopting a dog through their annual Adoptober rehoming campaign.

At Battersea Dogs and Cats Home in London, a total of 2,766 dogs were looked after across their three centers last year. Barney, under the care of Freya McVey at Dog’s Trust Merseyside, has been waiting for a new family since he was just six months old when his previous family had to give him up due to their baby’s allergies.

Despite being a sponsored dog receiving special pampering and treats, Barney has specific behavioral issues that require the right match in an adopter. The cost of caring for each dog at the Dog’s Trust home amounts to £57 per day, totaling nearly £21,000 annually, adding pressure to the staff.

Moreover, certain online trends influence adoption rates, leading to black greyhounds and lurchers being overlooked due to perceived difficulties in photographing them effectively. Katie Radcliffe from Blue Cross notes a significant increase in pets needing care, with a 20% rise in dog admissions last year alone.

Clare emphasizes that while Barney has a decent life in the kennels, the ultimate goal is to find him a loving permanent home. Prospective dog adopters can receive support from Dog’s Trust, including opportunities to trial having the dog at home for a night or weekend before formalizing the adoption.

For now, Barney will continue to wait patiently at Dog’s Trust Merseyside until the right individual or family comes along. Clare and Freya ensure he has plenty of treats and companionship while they hope for his happy ending.
