A father shared the tragic story of his 14-year-old son who had dinner with their family before collapsing in his bedroom due to inhaling deodorant fumes. Daniel Maguire, a fitness enthusiast teenager, passed away suddenly on September 27 in Hartstown, Dublin, after breathing in deodorant fumes. His father, Dermot, emphasized the dangers of a concerning trend called ‘fast gas’ and mourned his son’s death by stating, “It took one can of deodorant and a thousand lives changed.”
Dermot expressed his desire to raise awareness about the hazards associated with inhalants, stating, “If we can save just one young life, then Daniel’s passing won’t be in vain.” Recalling the night of the incident, Dermot narrated, “It was around 11 pm on September 26 when I was getting ready for bed. I asked Daniel for the front door key, and after a brief exchange, there was silence.” Upon checking on him, Dermot found Daniel unconscious on the bedroom floor, leading to frantic efforts by himself and his older son to revive him, but tragically realizing that Daniel had already passed away.
The family recounted Daniel’s activities earlier that evening, including playing sports, going to the gym, having dinner, and spending time with his family before retiring to his room. Dermot emphasized that Daniel was not a regular drug user but had a passion for fitness. He mentioned that Daniel’s actions may have been influenced by a possible challenge, such as those seen on social media platforms.
In the wake of Daniel’s untimely death, the family has discovered other cases of young individuals succumbing to aerosol inhalation, a concern they feel is not receiving sufficient public attention. Dermot created a poignant video urging teenagers to avoid such dangerous practices and for parents to engage in conversations with their children to prevent further tragedies. The aftermath of Daniel’s passing has left the family shattered, leading them to advocate for increased awareness and prevention efforts to avoid similar incidents in the future.
Dermot hopes that sharing Daniel’s story will serve as a cautionary tale and prompt action to halt the dangerous practice of inhaling aerosols. Experts have long warned about the severe health risks associated with inhaling aerosol propellants, including cardiac arrest, oxygen deprivation, and potential fatality. This concerning trend has been linked to online challenges that promote risky behaviors involving household sprays and gases.
