John Virgo, a renowned snooker commentator, has passed away at the age of 79. Virgo, known for his iconic commentary in the sport, recently appeared on the BBC during the Masters tournament.
Originally from Salford, Virgo had a successful snooker career and notably clinched the UK Championship title in 1979. He breathed his last in Spain, where he resided.
The sad news of Virgo’s death was confirmed by World Seniors Snooker chairman Jason Francis on social media, expressing condolences to Virgo’s family. BBC and World Snooker Tour also paid tribute to the legendary figure.
Fellow snooker personalities, including Ronnie O’Sullivan, Stephen Hendry, Shaun Murphy, and Neil Robertson, shared heartfelt messages honoring Virgo’s impact on the sport. Known for his catchphrase “Where’s the cue ball going?” and flamboyant style, Virgo was a beloved figure in the snooker community.
Virgo transitioned from playing to commentating after retiring in 1994, becoming a revered voice in the sport. He was recognized in the World Snooker Tour Hall of Fame for his contributions. Additionally, his partnership with Jim Davidson on the show “Big Break” was a memorable highlight of his career.
In his later years, Virgo and his wife Rosie Ries moved to Spain for a change of environment. Despite battling a neck injury and discussing his gambling struggles, Virgo continued to be an influential figure in snooker until his passing. He is survived by his children from previous marriages.
