Adrian Kearney, 71, from Swansea, found himself in significant debt after being lured by a fraudulent advertisement on Facebook, promising substantial profits with minimal investment. Despite disclosing his health issues, including arthritis and a lung condition, the scammers encouraged him to continue, applauding his perseverance.
Following the unauthorized withdrawals of £58,400 from his Barclays and Monzo accounts by the impostor posing as a wealth management professional, communication abruptly ceased. Adrian expressed deep regret and self-blame for falling victim to the scam, acknowledging his error in trusting the fraudulent promises.
Martin Lewis, emphasizing his lack of involvement in cryptocurrency discussions or endorsements, has consistently cautioned against falling for advertisements featuring his image. Adrian now faces the burden of repaying over £1,000 monthly to various lenders due to the scam’s repercussions.
Formerly employed in forensic medicine, Adrian has sought assistance from National Fraud Helpline lawyers to reclaim his funds from the implicated banks, who are mandated by regulators to safeguard clients from fraudulent activities. Adrian’s involvement in the scam began with promises of substantial returns for a modest initial investment, driven by a desire to fund a trip to Thailand with his wife. Despite his limited understanding of technology and cognitive challenges from dementia, he was manipulated into granting control of his phone to the fraudster, resulting in the acquisition of multiple loans and the transfer of funds to a Revolut account for alleged crypto investments.
