Three-year-old British girl, Cheryl Grimmer, disappeared without a trace 55 years ago while her family was at the beach. Cheryl, along with her parents Carole and Vince, and brothers Ricki, Stephen, and Paul, had moved from Bristol to Australia in 1968 for a fresh start. However, less than two years later, Cheryl went missing at the age of three.
On January 12, 1970, Cheryl was last seen at the beach with her mother and brothers. Her father, Vince, was serving in the Australian army at the time. The family decided to head back home around 1:30 pm, and as they were preparing to leave, Cheryl disappeared from the shower block where her siblings were.
Ricki, Cheryl’s older brother, alerted their mother that Cheryl was missing from the shower cubicle. By the time Carole arrived, Cheryl was nowhere to be found, sparking a frantic search by the family. Carole had to seek help from a nearby house to call the police as there was no phone at the beach.
Authorities initiated a large-scale search operation, considering various theories including that Cheryl had hidden and fallen asleep, wandered into the ocean, fallen into a waterway, or been abducted. Witnesses reported seeing a man carrying Cheryl wrapped in a towel and giving her water before disappearing with her in a white car.
Although several suspects were considered, no conclusive evidence led to any arrests. However, a local teenager, known as Mercury, confessed to Cheryl’s murder during police interrogations in the early 1970s. Despite the confession, there was insufficient evidence to prosecute him, and the case was closed.
In 2016, the case was reopened, and Mercury was arrested and charged in the following year. He pleaded not guilty to Cheryl’s murder, but the trial was dismissed due to the inadmissibility of his 1970s confession. Recently, Australian parliament member Jeremy Buckingham revealed Mercury’s real name, urging a fresh investigation into Cheryl’s case.
Cheryl’s family, who have endured decades of uncertainty, confronted Mercury with an ultimatum to explain his confession details or face public exposure. Ricki, Cheryl’s brother, expressed regret for his actions on the day of her disappearance and vowed to continue the family’s quest for justice.
