According to industry experts, renowned chocolate brands are among the most frequently stolen products, with some small businesses reporting significant losses of chocolate stock on a weekly basis.

Major supermarket chains like Sainsbury’s have taken measures such as using secure boxes for high-theft items, such as Cadbury Dairy Milk bars priced at £2.60, in some of their stores. Other retailers like Tesco and Co-Op have also adopted similar strategies by locking chocolate products in transparent boxes that require assistance from staff to access.
Store owners, like Sunita Aggarwal and Paul Cheema, have voiced concerns over the surge in chocolate theft incidents, attributing it to organized criminal activities. They highlight that theft of chocolate has become a lucrative venture for criminals, surpassing previous trends involving items like razors, cheese, and coffee.
Law enforcement agencies have released videos showing thieves stealing chocolate from stores, underscoring the severity of the issue. Instances include West Midlands Police sharing CCTV footage of a man grabbing trays of chocolate and Wiltshire Police revealing a man dragging an entire shelving unit loaded with chocolate out of a store.
Authorities emphasize that chocolate, alongside other high-value items like alcohol, meat, and coffee, is a prime target for thieves. The British Retail Consortium reported over 5.5 million cases of shoplifting last year, resulting in substantial financial losses for retailers.
The surge in chocolate theft incidents coincides with a notable increase in the cost of chocolate treats, with prices rising by more than 15% in the past year, according to data from the TUC.
Retail chains like the Heart of England Co-Op group report substantial financial losses due to chocolate theft, with one shop alone facing thousands of pounds in losses weekly. The organization’s chief executive, Steve Browne, highlights the significant impact of chocolate theft on businesses.
