Critics Slam Reform UK’s Plan to Cut PIP for Anxiety

Reform UK’s stringent proposal to eliminate the Personal Independence Payment (PIP) for individuals with anxiety has been criticized as “cruel, heartless, and reprehensible.” The party led by Nigel Farage made this announcement during a recent press conference in London, outlining their intention to end PIP for claimants with “non-serious anxiety disorders” and implement more frequent assessments for eligible recipients.

This proposal is part of a series of reforms aimed at overhauling the welfare system, including a commitment to conducting all assessments in person and introducing a “fast track to work” program for those facing benefit reductions. However, discrepancies arose during the press conference when Lee Anderson MP and Zia Yusuf, the party’s head of policy, initially stated that all assessments would be face-to-face, contradicting their own policy document which acknowledged that the “vast majority” of assessments are conducted in this manner.

Zia Yusuf further emphasized a comprehensive crackdown on benefits, projecting potential savings of £9 billion annually by 2029. Despite Reform UK’s assertion that they would only terminate PIP for cases of “non-serious” anxiety disorders, they struggled to clarify the criteria when pressed by journalists at the event.

In response, a PIP recipient expressed concerns over the party’s stance, stating that the rhetoric surrounding the support system only serves to further isolate individuals in need. The recipient highlighted the significant impact of mental health conditions on daily life and emphasized the importance of support and understanding in the welfare system.

The proposed reforms have faced strong opposition, with Labour MP Jon Trickett condemning the plans as targeting the most vulnerable in society. Additionally, Tom Pollard from mental health charity Mind criticized Reform UK for misunderstanding the nature of PIP assessments and warned of the potential adverse effects of reducing financial support for individuals struggling with mental health issues.

Disability charity Sense emphasized the crucial role of PIP as a lifeline for disabled individuals, citing instances of humiliation and inadequate support during benefits assessments. Meanwhile, Labour MP Debbie Abrahams called for a compassionate approach, highlighting the serious repercussions of withdrawing support from those in need.

The party’s welfare spokesman, Mr. Anderson, advocated for a return to work as the optimal solution for individuals, drawing on his personal experience to emphasize the benefits of employment. This development follows Labour’s failed attempt earlier this year to revise PIP eligibility criteria, resulting in a government review led by disabilities minister Sir Stephen Timms, with the report expected by autumn 2026.
