A former employee of the tech company Apple, known as Sam Sung, recently shared that he decided to change his name to avoid becoming the subject of online ridicule. The individual, now identified as Sam Struan, gained attention in 2012 when a photo of his Apple store business card circulated online. Originally from Glasgow, he worked at an Apple store and later relocated to Canada.
The decision to change his name stemmed from an incident in which a customer at the Vancouver Apple store noticed the similarity between his name and a rival tech company, Samsung. Concerned about potential negative impacts on his future job prospects, Struan opted for a new identity to distance himself from the online attention he received.
Currently thriving as a recruitment consultant, Struan explained that he selected the surname “Struan” in tribute to a beloved village on the Isle of Skye. Reflecting on his experience, he expressed relief at no longer being associated with the viral joke surrounding his original name, which he felt could have affected his career advancement negatively.
Acknowledging the influence of one’s name on career opportunities, Struan highlighted the importance of establishing a professional brand through social media and online presence, particularly in fields like recruitment. Despite the initial fear and anxiety caused by his sudden internet fame, Struan now wishes he had approached the situation with more ease and embraced the moment for what it was.
Looking back on the period of intense online attention, Struan recalled feeling overwhelmed by the unexpected viral fame and the impact it had on his daily life. While initially alarmed by the situation, he now recognizes the humor in it and regrets not having enjoyed the experience more during that time.
