“Lindsey Vonn Updates Fans After Third Surgery”

Lindsey Vonn, a renowned figure in skiing, provided an update on her condition via social media after undergoing her third surgery stemming from a tragic accident that dashed her Olympic aspirations at the Milan‑Cortina event. The 41-year-old American sustained a leg fracture during the Milan Cortina Games, necessitating immediate hospitalization following a severe crash, shortly after tearing her ACL just over a week prior.

Vonn, representing Team USA, encountered a mishap while competing in the women’s downhill event, hitting a gate, losing balance, and tumbling down the slope only 13 seconds into her run. Following the incident, she received extensive on-site medical attention before being airlifted to a nearby medical facility for further care.

In an Instagram post on Wednesday evening, Vonn shared, “I underwent my 3rd successful surgery today. The meaning of success has evolved significantly in the past few days. I am making gradual progress, and although it is a slow process, I am confident in my recovery. I am grateful for the outstanding medical team, the unwavering support of friends and family, and the overwhelming love and encouragement from people worldwide.”

She also extended congratulations to her fellow teammates and all the inspiring Team USA athletes for their performances, providing her with motivation and something to cheer for during her recovery phase.

It was later confirmed that Vonn would require multiple surgeries to mend her leg injury, with the recent one being her third. While facing an extensive rehabilitation period ahead, there remains a possibility that she could return to skiing within a year.

Notably, fellow skier Federica Brignone, who endured severe leg fractures and an ACL tear during the 2025 Italian Championships last April, made a remarkable comeback after just 10 months. Brignone competed against Vonn on Cortina’s Olympia piste.

Regarding Vonn’s recovery outlook, Andrea Panzeri, the head of the Medical Commission of the Italian Winter Sports Federation, mentioned the complexity of the fracture and its potential impact on her career trajectory. However, he highlighted Brignone’s successful recovery from a similar injury, portraying optimism for Vonn’s future.

Orthopedic surgeon Filippo Pierfrancesco Calanna from Milan’s Gaetano Pini Orthopaedic and Trauma Centre emphasized that despite Vonn’s exceptional physical attributes, her age might prolong the recovery process. He stressed the significance of motivation and mindset in the recovery journey, citing potential risks like early arthritis development that could affect joint functionality.

Moreover, Vonn’s previous leg injuries, including a partial knee implant, may influence her recovery timeline, posing additional challenges to her rehabilitation progress.
