Barry Hearn has criticized the lack of decorum in Conor Benn’s departure from Matchroom to Zuffa Boxing, bypassing any communication with Eddie Hearn. The 29-year-old confirmed the move to be managed by the Saudi-backed promoter led by UFC president Dana White.
Benn chose to part ways with his long-time promoters, who supported him through thick and thin, including a past doping incident. Despite Eddie Hearn’s efforts to discuss their future collaboration, Benn showed no interest in engaging, which displeased Hearn.
Barry expressed disappointment in Benn’s approach, stating that while Dana White’s offer was substantial, it was disheartening to see Benn sever ties with the team that had nurtured him. Benn’s switch makes him the second prominent signing for Zuffa, alongside cruiserweight champion Jai Opetaia.
Eddie Hearn’s attempt to arrange a meeting with Benn was rebuffed, with Benn opting for legal involvement instead. Barry described the situation as the most unpleasant he has encountered in over five decades of sports promotion.
Benn, positioned as the mandatory challenger for the WBC welterweight title, emphasized that accepting the lucrative offer was a rational choice. Hearn acknowledged that Benn’s decision to explore different opportunities would have been acceptable if handled differently.
Hearn emphasized the importance of mutual standards, which he felt were not reciprocated in this instance.
