A man from the UK is potentially facing a 20-year prison sentence after being convicted of the drug-induced killing of another man he met for a weekend rendezvous. Aaron Rainbow, a helicopter pilot originally from Surrey, was found guilty by a jury of the intentional and violent murder of Oscar Tornero, 38, by stabbing him multiple times in various areas of his body following a binge on crystal meth and GHB.
Rainbow had initially claimed self-defense before his trial, stating that he felt threatened and confused due to the mix of drugs they had consumed at Tornero’s residence near the Catalan capital. He expressed in court that he believed he was being recorded and that strangers were waiting to harm him.
During the trial, it was revealed that Rainbow armed himself with a knife out of fear and paranoia, ultimately leading to the fatal stabbing of Tornero, who worked in a fashion store and as an escort. The prosecution sought a 19-year prison term for Rainbow, which was later increased to 20 years following the jury’s decision.
Despite the defense’s arguments of temporary insanity and self-defense, Rainbow was found guilty by an 8-1 jury verdict. His sentencing will be determined at a later date, considering the two years he has already spent in custody since his arrest. The trial judge will communicate the final sentence in writing to the prosecution and defense lawyers.
Family members of Rainbow have likened the case to a suspenseful thriller, raising concerns about the investigation conducted by Spanish authorities. They claim that crucial evidence, including electronic devices, was not thoroughly examined to support Rainbow’s assertions of feeling watched and set up.
