“Empowering Parents to Navigate AI in Children’s Online World”

AI’s influence is increasingly felt in our daily lives, posing challenges for parents trying to keep pace with the rapid changes. Families are now tasked with guiding their children through a digital landscape saturated with AI, from social media interactions to school assignments and friendships, as underscored by the recent Safer Internet Day.

The question arises: How can parents ensure their children’s safety in an online world where distinguishing reality from deception is a formidable task? In 2026, we have teamed up with Tesco Mobile, a key supporter of Safer Internet Day, to promote family discussions through The Family Chat initiative. This initiative aims to facilitate open and candid dialogues at home about online safety, making the daunting task more manageable.

Renowned author and podcaster Giovanna Fletcher, a mother of three boys with her husband Tom, will engage with parents and children to address the challenges they encounter in today’s digital landscape. The inaugural conversation will delve into the realm of AI and highlight the significance of Tesco Mobile’s Online Safety Hub, a valuable tool aiding parents in safeguarding children of all age groups up to 18.

Similar to many families, the Karleys, comprising Anna, Emmanuel, and their children Joshua, Isaac, and Ruby, heavily rely on their devices for connectivity. However, Anna and Emmanuel admit their struggle in comprehending AI, a drawback when it comes to ensuring safety online. They acknowledge the difficulty in identifying AI-generated content, with Joshua highlighting the prevalence of realistic AI on platforms like TikTok.

Homework tasks are increasingly shifting to online platforms, often involving AI-generated research, a trend that the Karleys and Giovanna are navigating. Giovanna observes the shift to computer-based homework with her eldest in secondary school, emphasizing the importance of evaluating the optimal use of AI in educational settings.

To guide children in using AI safely, consider the following tips:

1. Explore AI together: Collaborate as a family to experiment with AI through creative activities.
2. AI Isn’t Always Right: Encourage children to fact-check AI-generated answers and question the sources.
3. Check Age Limits & Privacy: Stick to age-appropriate platforms and review privacy settings together for a safer online experience.
4. Talk About What’s Real: Discuss the prevalence of misinformation online and teach children how to verify information.
5. Use AI as a Support, Not a Shortcut: Encourage critical thinking and problem-solving skills alongside AI utilization.

The Karleys appreciate having a reliable resource like Tesco Mobile’s Online Safety Hub for guidance. This platform offers user-friendly resources and toolkits to aid parents in discussing AI with their children, including tailored tips on safe AI usage developed in collaboration with the UK Safer Internet Centre. Additionally, it provides engaging AI quizzes for the whole family to enjoy and discuss.

While the Karley family already prioritizes online safety discussions, they find Tesco Mobile’s Online Safety Hub to be an invaluable asset in enhancing their understanding and support for their children. “We can now delve deeper into the topic and educate ourselves together to better support our children,” notes Emmanuel.
