ITV host Rishi Persad shared a chilling experience of witnessing a missile attack while covering a horse racing event in Dubai, UAE. Persad recounted how the cameramen alerted him and his co-presenter, Angus McNae, to a red light streaking across the sky followed by explosions, causing a moment of fear. Despite the unsettling incident, the racing event continued as scheduled.
Amidst the turmoil, the 52-year-old plans to fly back home for his wife’s milestone 50th birthday and fulfill his presenting duties at the upcoming prestigious Cheltenham Festival. His family, particularly his wife and teenage daughter, expressed concerns for his safety given the unforeseen circumstances. Persad remains optimistic about returning home and reassured that ITV is informed about his situation.
Originally set to depart from the Middle East on Sunday, Persad faced travel disruptions due to ongoing conflicts. However, he managed to secure a flight back to the UK on Thursday afternoon, emphasizing the lack of contingency plans. The presenter had traveled to Dubai for a professional commitment without prior knowledge of the escalating situation until fellow presenter Megan Nicholls informed him.
While reflecting on the tense atmosphere at the racecourse, Persad mentioned the discussions surrounding safety concerns but appreciated the prompt assurances from the Dubai Racing Club that the event would proceed safely. Notably, landmarks and hotels in Dubai were targeted during the missile attacks, creating a sense of unease among the event attendees.
Despite the unsettling turn of events, the presence of Dubai’s ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, at the race meeting provided a sense of reassurance to Persad and others present. The unexpected turn of events coincided with US President Donald Trump’s announcement of military actions in Iran, adding to the global tension.
