A teacher has faced a professional ban after engaging in inappropriate sexual discussions with students at a high school in Wigan. Ms Kathryn Matthews, an English teacher at The Westleigh School for two months, was suspended after students reported the conversations. The incident, involving talks about orgasms and sex toys, led to her being struck off from teaching by the Teaching Regulation Authority for serious misconduct. According to reports, a fellow staff member was made aware of the discussions.
During the panel hearing, it was revealed that Ms Matthews allegedly discussed sexual topics with students, including a story about a boy and a sex toy. Students mentioned having regular similar chats with her, seeing her more as a friend than a teacher. An investigation was initiated after the incident was reported, including speaking with students from the class.
Despite Ms Matthews claiming the students conspired against her, the panel found her conduct unacceptable. They noted that while she was well-liked by her class, the allegations were not likely fabricated. In response to the allegations, Ms Matthews mentioned redirecting the class during a lesson on A Christmas Carol and denied some of the specific claims made against her.
Following the investigation, it was discovered that Ms Matthews had engaged in discussions on various sexual subjects during an English lesson. The panel concluded that her conduct fell significantly short of professional standards, leading to her dismissal in February 2024. As a result, she is now banned from teaching in any educational setting in England, with the option to appeal the prohibition order after two years.
