“Trial Reveals Harassment of McCann Family by Accused Women”

Two women accused of harassing Madeleine McCann’s family are facing trial, with claims that one of them left a voicemail for the missing girl’s mother, Kate, alleging a cover-up. The ongoing court proceedings at Leicester Crown Court have involved testimonies from Kate, Gerry, and their younger children, highlighting the distress caused by the alleged actions of Julia Wandelt and Karen Spragg.

Wandelt stands accused of asserting her identity as Madeleine to the family and showing up at their residence, prompting authorities to conduct a DNA test, which conclusively proved she is not the missing girl. Detective Chief Inspector Cranwell informed Wandelt of these results during a prison visit, emphasizing her non-connection to Madeleine.

Operation Grange, led by DCI Cranwell, now operates part-time with limited manpower. The investigation has received numerous claims from individuals believing they are Madeleine, all of whom were eliminated through photo and detail comparisons.

Wandelt, a 24-year-old from Poland, faces charges of stalking the McCanns and sending numerous communications to the family. Her co-defendant, Karen Spragg, 61, is also accused of stalking and delivering messages to the McCanns and their children.

The court proceedings have included recordings of voicemails left by Spragg, suggesting a familial connection to the McCanns through DNA testing. However, the authorities have maintained that Wandelt is not Madeleine and have reiterated this fact to her through various means, aiming to halt her alleged harassment.

Detective Draycott, a key figure in Operation Grange, has provided insights into the investigation, detailing the process of ruling out individuals claiming to be Madeleine. The court has heard how Wandelt persistently reached out to the McCann family, believing she had a biological connection to them, despite evidence to the contrary.

The trial continues with testimonies highlighting the impact of the accused individuals’ actions on the McCann family and the extensive efforts undertaken by law enforcement to address the harassment allegations.
