“Woman with Rare Condition Seeks Funds for Life-Saving Rib Surgery”

A woman shared her struggles with a debilitating condition that prevents her from singing or laughing due to the constant risk of her ribs dislocating. Melanie Hartshorn, who has Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS), had to undergo innovative surgeries to fuse her neck and spine together, enabling her to walk for the first time last year.

Despite making progress and moving into her own bungalow, Melanie faced a setback when doctors found that four of her ribs had dislocated following a recent surgery. To address this issue, she needs to raise £85,000 for a specialized operation not covered by the NHS. Surgeons emphasize the importance of fusing the dislocated ribs to prevent further complications that could impact her breathing.

Melanie, based in Northumberland, is currently seeking financial support for the surgery in Spain as she remains immobile to avoid exacerbating her condition. With her ribs at risk of dislocating further, even normal actions like laughing, singing, or coughing pose dangers. Having lived with a halo brace to protect against severe neck injuries, Melanie underwent a groundbreaking surgery in Barcelona in 2022 that allowed her to walk but faced new challenges with her ribs earlier this year.

During a recent operation, surgeons discovered the dislocation of her ribs, which had destabilized her original spinal fusion at T4. Melanie expressed shock at the situation, noting that the surgical team likened the internal damage to that of a car crash victim despite her minimal activity. While the initial surgery cost £25,000, she now requires an additional £60,000 for the rib fusion procedure to prevent further complications affecting her breathing.

Through a GoFundMe campaign, Melanie has raised £20,000 so far and expressed gratitude for the support received. Despite setbacks, she remains determined to regain her independence and resume her studies, viewing her journey as a continual push forward despite obstacles.
