Boxing Champion Ricky Hatton’s Tragic Death Not Premeditated

Ricky Hatton, the renowned boxer, was discovered deceased at his residence in Manchester last year, with injuries indicating a possible hanging, according to a pathologist’s report. The cause of death was officially recorded as hanging, with no signs of suspicious circumstances surrounding the incident, as revealed during an inquest. Hatton’s close circle, including his son Campbell, gathered at Stockport coroner’s court as the investigation into his passing commenced.

Among those present were long-time friend and manager Paul Speak, Ricky’s father Ray, brother Matthew, and former partner Jennifer Dooley. The ex-world champion was found at his £1.7 million home in Hyde, Greater Manchester, on September 14, 2023, at the age of 46. Paul Speak discovered him unresponsive at the property, after Hatton had last been seen alive by family members on September 12, appearing well. His absence at a scheduled event prompted concern, leading to the discovery of his body by Paul Speak on the morning of September 14.

The senior coroner, Alison Mutch, highlighted during the inquest that while Hatton had significant future plans, there were no indications of intent to end his life based on the evidence. She emphasized the uncertainties surrounding his intentions, especially considering his alcohol consumption and the presence of chronic traumatic encephalopathy in his brain. Hatton’s family expressed their belief that his death was not premeditated, stating that he seemed to be in a good place and had promising plans for the future.

Post-mortem examinations revealed signs of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a degenerative brain condition often associated with repetitive head trauma, in the former boxing champion’s brain. The analysis also indicated degenerative changes consistent with conditions like Alzheimer’s disease. Despite Hatton’s past struggles with alcohol and drugs, his family attested that he appeared to be in a positive state before his untimely passing.

The inquest depicted Ricky Hatton as a loving family man who cherished his family dearly, with his children missing him profoundly. The coroner expressed sympathy for his family’s loss and the unexpected tragedy of burying a child. The revelation of CTE in Hatton’s brain shed light on the potential impact of his boxing career on his health, adding a layer of complexity to the circumstances surrounding his demise.

As the inquest unfolded, the narrative surrounding Hatton’s death painted a picture of a man with unresolved issues but also with promising plans and a deep love for his family, leaving behind a legacy that extended beyond his accolades in the boxing ring.
