Constitution Hill showcased his growing prowess as a Flat racer with another victory at Kempton Park on Wednesday evening. The nine-year-old, previously known for his success in the Champion Hurdle, triumphed in a 1m4f novice stakes race on the all-weather track, partnered with renowned jockey Ryan Moore.
Following a successful debut in the Flat racing scene earlier this year, Constitution Hill, trained by Nicky Henderson, was heavily favored to clinch the £6,480 prize in the Virgin Bet-sponsored event. Fans gathered in large numbers to witness the once dominant hurdler’s progression in his new endeavor.
Facing a pivotal moment in his jumping career after a series of falls in recent races, Constitution Hill transitioned to Flat racing just over a month ago. Henderson strategically targeted the prestigious £40,000 SBK Road To Cheltenham Novice Stakes at Southwell for the seasoned runner.
The plan proved to be a masterstroke as Constitution Hill, ridden by Oisín Murphy, surged to victory by a commanding margin of nine and a half lengths in front of an enthusiastic crowd at Southwell. This stellar performance prompted Henderson to shift the focus from hurdles to the Flat races for the talented gelding.
Reflecting on the decision, Henderson expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support received by Constitution Hill, affectionately known as Conrad. The trainer emphasized the importance of the horse’s well-being and enjoyment in his new racing discipline.
Returning to familiar grounds at Kempton Park, where he had previously excelled in the Christmas Hurdle, Constitution Hill thrilled the audience once again. Under the expert guidance of Moore, the favorite settled in fifth place before making a decisive move in the final stages to secure victory over Classical Allusion.
Moore praised Constitution Hill’s adaptability and hinted at further improvements in future races. Henderson also shared his satisfaction with the horse’s performance, highlighting the joy and relief in witnessing Constitution Hill excel in his new racing career.
The transition from hurdles to Flat racing has rejuvenated Constitution Hill’s racing journey, offering a fresh perspective on his capabilities and potential for success on the track.
