“UK Alt-Nets Outperform Major Broadband Providers”

A recent report by consumer advocate Which? reveals that some of the major broadband providers in the UK are not meeting customer expectations for reliable service. The report indicates that smaller alternative networks, known as “alt-nets,” are outperforming larger brands by offering faster speeds, more dependable connections, and better value.

The study highlights that internet connection issues, such as frequent dropouts, slow download speeds, and service outages, are common complaints among broadband users. A significant 91% of customers reported experiencing problems with their service in the past year, indicating a lack of trouble-free connections for most households.

Sky, one of the prominent providers, faced criticism for frequent dropouts reported by 38% of customers, although these issues were quickly resolved. Virgin Media also struggled with 30% of users facing regular connection dropouts despite paying premium prices, with around a quarter of customers dissatisfied with slow download speeds.

Among dissatisfied customers, Sky users expressed frustration with slow broadband speeds, while TalkTalk and Sky’s NOW service also received poor ratings. On the other hand, smaller providers like Zen Internet, Community Fibre, and Hyperoptic received praise for fewer reliability issues compared to major brands.

Plusnet emerged as a standout performer among larger providers, surpassing competitors like Vodafone, EE, BT, and Sky. This aligns with previous Which? research showing that smaller broadband companies consistently excel in reliability, customer service, and value for money compared to leading providers in the UK.

Which? recommends that households explore alternative providers available in their area and consider switching services if they are dissatisfied. Using Ofcom’s broadband checker can help easily identify available broadband networks for comparison.

In response to the report, a spokesperson from Virgin Media emphasized their ongoing investment to enhance services, citing positive feedback from Ofcom’s data and independent rankings that position Virgin Media as a top performer in various broadband categories.

The report underscores the importance of quality broadband service as essential, urging consumers to leverage competitive deals and switch providers to drive better service standards.
