Kenyan athlete Sabastian Sawe shattered a longstanding marathon world record at the London Marathon, finishing in an impressive time of 1:59:30. Sawe surpassed the previous record of 2:00:35 set by Kelvin Kiptum, securing his victory for the second consecutive year.
This achievement marked a significant improvement from last year’s time of 2:02:27. The intense competition in the elite men’s race came down to a thrilling finish between Sawe and Ethiopia’s Yomif Kejelcha.
Sawe managed to break away from Kejelcha in the final stretch, securing his place in history. Kejelcha also finished in under two hours, claiming second place in a close race between the two athletes.
The remarkable performance left Olympic silver medallist Steve Cram speechless, praising Sawe’s historic accomplishment. He expressed astonishment at witnessing such an incredible feat and emphasized the impact it would have on the sporting world.
Paula Radcliffe also commended Sawe’s achievement, stating that it would resonate globally. Sawe, when asked about his record-breaking potential before the race, confidently affirmed his belief in his capabilities.
Following his victory, Sawe expressed his excitement upon seeing his final time and credited the enthusiastic crowds for their support. He acknowledged that his success was a collective effort involving everyone in London.
In the women’s elite race, Tigst Assefa secured victory for the second consecutive year, setting a new women’s London Marathon record with a time of 2:15:41. Kenyan runners Hellen Obiri and Joyciline Jepkosgei finished second and third, respectively.
Swiss athlete Marcel Hug claimed his sixth consecutive victory in the men’s wheelchair race, matching the record set by David Weir. Catherine Debrunner of Switzerland successfully defended her title in the women’s wheelchair race.
