The surge in fuel prices has led to a significant increase in sales of electric vehicles, according to industry data. The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders reported that March experienced the highest number of new car registrations since 2019, a critical month due to plate changes that attract buyers.
A total of 380,627 vehicles were registered in March, marking a 6.6% rise from the previous year. Notably, electrified vehicles saw a record-breaking month with 196,059 units sold, predominantly driven by battery electric cars, which saw a 24% surge to 86,120 registrations.
The top-selling model in the UK for March was the Jaecoo 7, a Chinese-manufactured vehicle, capturing the lead spot for the first time. Jaecoo, introduced to the UK market in February 2025, witnessed a remarkable 570% jump in sales compared to the previous year, outselling established brands like Volvo and Tesla.
Moreover, plug-in hybrid car sales soared by 46.9%, while demand for hybrid electric vehicles rose by 7.3%. In contrast, traditional petrol and diesel car sales continued to decline, with plans to ban their sale in the UK by 2030.
