Russian soldiers loyal to Vladimir Putin are reportedly facing starvation on a remote island, as confirmed by Ukrainian authorities. The soldiers, numbering around 5,000, are stranded in a perilous area along the Dnipro River, cut off from the main Russian forces. This deserted region near Kherson has been a battleground since November 2022.
Ukraine controls one side of the river bank, while the other side remains under Russian command. The isolated location offers little protection for Putin’s troops, making them vulnerable to drone attacks.
Reports from Ukrainian officials indicate that over 5,100 Russian soldiers have perished on the island since January, with limited access to essential supplies. Disturbing footage shows Russian soldiers camouflaging themselves with vegetation to evade drone strikes.
In a desperate attempt to avoid bombings, a group of soldiers was seen crowding into a small dinghy. Colonel Oleksandr Zavtonov of Ukraine’s 30th Marine Corps described the area as a death trap for Russian troops, stating that there is no safe haven.
Oksana Kuzan, head of the analytical department at the Ukrainian Security and Cooperation Centre, highlighted the dire situation faced by the soldiers, citing shortages of food, ammunition, and rotation difficulties.
Recently, Ukrainian President Zelensky expressed optimism about a US-brokered ceasefire in Gaza and called on former US President Donald Trump to exert similar pressure on Russia. Zelensky urged for a comprehensive approach, including military action, sanctions, and diplomatic efforts, to halt Putin’s aggression.
Leaders from various countries, including Ukraine, the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Poland, Norway, Finland, Denmark, the European Commission, and European Council, jointly advocated for peace and emphasized the importance of upholding Ukraine’s territorial integrity through peaceful negotiations.
