“Badminton Partner Saves Grandfather’s Life with CPR and Defibrillator”

A grandfather of five experienced a cardiac arrest while playing badminton and expresses immense gratitude towards his game partner for saving his life. Ian Jurd, aged 77, collapsed during a spirited match at Medstead Village Hall in Hampshire, shortly after his wife Jackie advised him to take it easy.

Fortunately, Ian’s friend and badminton companion, Dave Mills, aged 70, was able to administer CPR, a skill he acquired as a Scout leader. Despite Ian ceasing to breathe, Dave persisted in performing CPR for 20 minutes to maintain blood flow to his brain until paramedics arrived.

Adding to the stroke of luck, the village hall had recently installed a defibrillator outside, a move that has been advocated for by The Mirror to be more prevalent in public locations.

Dave successfully utilized the defibrillator to revive Ian’s heart after six attempts. Reflecting on the incident, Dave humorously mentions not wearing his glasses but finding the AED instructions easy to follow.

One year post the life-threatening episode, Ian encourages others to learn CPR, coinciding with today’s observance of Restart A Heart Day on October 16. He emphasizes the importance of being prepared to act swiftly in emergencies, as cardiac arrest can affect anyone.

Ian, a retired builder with healthy lifestyle habits, underwent a triple bypass following a heart attack in 2021. Despite the scare, his recovery progressed well, allowing him to resume his active routine with close monitoring from medical professionals.

On that fateful September day, Ian expressed an interest in playing badminton after a hiatus, prompting Jackie’s cautionary words before he left. Upon receiving a distressing call, Jackie rushed to the village hall, only to witness the dramatic scene of Dave attending to her husband’s motionless body.

Dave’s CPR efforts enabled paramedics to restore Ian’s heartbeat and airlift him to the hospital, where he was placed in an induced coma for six days. Ian attributes his survival to Dave, acknowledging him as the key to his miraculous recovery, considering the absence of brain damage despite the prolonged lack of breathing.

Upon regaining consciousness, Ian learned of Dave’s heroism from his family, leading to an emotional phone call expressing gratitude. The friends reunited weeks later, marking the occasion with tears of joy as Ian’s health improved, culminating in a visit to Thruxton Aerodrome to meet the air ambulance team who played a vital role in his rescue.

Currently, Ian is spearheading a campaign to install a second defibrillator in the village, alongside resuming his passion for gardening, all while cherishing the invaluable bond with Dave. Ian reflects on his second chance at life with a sense of gratitude, emphasizing the strengthened friendship with Dave as a profound blessing.

Dave, modest in demeanor, credits the entire medical team for Ian’s survival, highlighting the collective effort involved in saving lives. He emphasizes the universal potential for individuals to make a life-saving difference in critical situations.
