“Beware: Unofficial Chargers Pose Shock and Fire Hazards”

An urgent warning has been issued to users of Android or iPhone devices regarding the potential dangers of using unofficial chargers. With many new devices being sold without chargers, consumers are often forced to seek alternative options, leading to the purchase of cheaper, unofficial chargers available online. However, consumer advocate group Which? has raised concerns about the safety of these discounted chargers.

Which? conducted tests on various chargers bought from online platforms like Amazon, AliExpress, eBay, and more. Shockingly, they discovered that nine chargers had the potential to cause electric shocks due to poor manufacturing, while eight were identified as fire or explosion hazards. In one case, a charger designed to resemble an Apple product was found to be a counterfeit posing serious safety risks.

The investigation also uncovered chargers lacking essential UK safety markings and others with faulty internal components that could lead to overheating, fires, or explosions. This is not the first time Which? has highlighted the risks associated with unsafe electrical products sold online.

Sue Davies, Head of Consumer Protection Policy at Which?, emphasized the severe consequences of poorly designed electrical items and called for stricter product safety regulations for online marketplaces. Responding to the concerns, Amazon assured customers of its commitment to safety and stated that all products on its platform must meet legal standards. The identified hazardous chargers have been removed, and Amazon actively monitors for safety issues.

B&Q also affirmed its dedication to product safety and ensures that recalled items are not available on its Marketplace. Consumers are advised to purchase chargers from official retailers or reputable brands like Apple, Belkin, Anker, and Samsung to mitigate safety risks associated with cheaper alternatives. While these products may come at a higher price, experts warn that the potential dangers outweigh the cost savings.
