British troops have been deployed to Israel to assist in overseeing a fragile ceasefire in Gaza following a request from the United States. The UK Defense Secretary, John Healey, confirmed that a senior commander and a small team of military personnel will be stationed in the area, playing a pivotal role in a multinational force. The British commander will act as the deputy in the American-led Civil Military Coordination Centre in Israel, working alongside troops from Qatar, Egypt, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates, as per US officials.
This decision comes shortly after Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper stated that the UK had no intentions of sending soldiers as part of the force. Speaking in London, Mr. Healey emphasized that Britain will contribute its expertise and skills to support ceasefire monitoring efforts led by others without taking a leading role.
The ceasefire, brokered by US President Donald Trump, faced a test when Israel accused Hamas of killing two soldiers, leading to Israeli airstrikes in southern Gaza. Subsequently, at least 45 Palestinians, including children, were reported dead in the strikes before both parties reaffirmed their commitment to the agreement.
A spokesperson from the Ministry of Defence mentioned that a few UK planning officers have been integrated into the US-led Civil Military Coordination Centre to ensure UK involvement in post-conflict stability planning for Gaza. The UK is collaborating with international partners to assist in the peace process within the region.
The US has agreed to provide up to 200 troops to support the multinational force, with the UK contingent, like its American counterparts, not operating within the Gaza Strip. The task force is expected to coordinate with the IDF and aid in delivering humanitarian assistance to the Palestinians in Gaza, who have faced delays in receiving food convoys.
While specific details regarding the force’s role, command structure, and legal status are yet to be finalized, it is anticipated that the operation will contribute to maintaining the ceasefire and supporting the humanitarian needs of the affected population in Gaza.
