“Easter Staycations Soar in UK Amid Travel Safety Concerns”

An estimated 12.5 million individuals in the UK are preparing for a staycation this Easter, opting to explore domestic destinations amid concerns over travel safety due to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. The surge in domestic holiday plans represents a significant increase from the previous year’s 10.6 million, projecting a substantial boost of £4.8 billion to the tourism sector and the broader economy, as reported by VisitEngland.

The preference for staycations far outweighs the 7.4 million people planning trips abroad during the Easter period. Most staycationers are opting for short breaks lasting between one to three nights. Concerns related to the Middle East conflict have impacted travel decisions, with 28% of respondents expressing worries about potential disruptions to their travel plans, primarily due to economic constraints. The apprehensions include fears of escalating airfares and potential flight cancellations.

The current trend of choosing Easter staycations in the UK marks a notable increase compared to previous years, with 2024 seeing 11 million staycationers and 2023 having 6.5 million. Additionally, 5.1 million individuals remain undecided about embarking on an overnight holiday within the UK over the Easter weekend, citing financial considerations and weather uncertainties as primary reasons. Weather forecasts indicate a mixed outlook for the upcoming period, with stable conditions expected over the Easter break.

However, individuals opting for road trips and domestic holidays are facing financial challenges, particularly due to the soaring fuel prices resulting from recent geopolitical events in the Middle East. The current national average for unleaded petrol has risen to 150p per litre, marking a 17p increase since the conflict began. Diesel prices have surged even further, averaging at 176.68p per litre, a significant jump of 34p in recent weeks.

Simon Williams, the head of policy at RAC, highlighted the impact of rising fuel costs on travel expenses, emphasizing the need for careful planning to mitigate increased expenditure. With average fuel prices at motorway services reaching 166p for unleaded and 182p for diesel, drivers embarking on long journeys are advised to explore cost-effective refueling options using available apps like myRAC.

Moreover, families considering Easter holidays within the UK are also grappling with additional financial pressures, including upcoming bill hikes and potential food price inflation. Despite these challenges, businesses in the domestic tourism sector are observing a positive trend, with an increasing number of guests preferring UK stays over international travel destinations.

Tourism Minister Stephanie Peacock commended the public for embracing staycations, emphasizing the positive impact on local economies and small businesses. VisitEngland’s chief executive, Patricia Yates, encouraged holidaymakers to explore the diverse offerings of the UK, emphasizing the unique experiences and attractions available during the spring season.

As the tourism industry prepares for the crucial Easter weekend, concerns have been raised about proposed visitor levies on overnight stays, termed as a potential “tourist tax.” The proposal, under consideration by Labour, could impose additional charges on accommodations, potentially affecting small businesses and holidaymakers. Economic modeling suggests that such levies could lead to significant tax increases for consumers and economic repercussions in the long run.

Overall, the current trend indicates a shift towards domestic holiday preferences, with a growing emphasis on supporting local tourism and exploring the diverse landscapes and cultural offerings within the UK. Despite prevailing challenges, the tourism sector remains optimistic about welcoming visitors and providing memorable experiences for travelers during the spring season.
