An elderly woman, Suzanne Rees, was discovered deceased on a secluded island after being inadvertently left behind by a cruise ship. The 80-year-old tourist was reported missing when she failed to show up for dinner, approximately five hours after disappearing on Lizard Island in Queensland, Australia. She had taken part in a guided hike but became unwell, and the cruise ship departed for its next destination while she remained on the island.
Coral Expeditions, operated by the National Roads and Motorists’ Association (NRMA) in Australia, is under scrutiny for what Ms. Rees’ family describes as a lack of care and judgment. The incident occurred during the initial leg of the Coral Adventurer’s 60-day voyage around Australia, a luxury holiday priced at £40,000 per person. Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding Ms. Rees’ absence from the ship, including allegations that a passenger count was not conducted prior to departure.
Ms. Rees’ body was discovered 50 meters off the hiking trail leading to Cook’s Look, the highest summit on Lizard Island. The Coral Adventurer had set sail from Cairns on Friday and had anchored at Lizard Island on Saturday, allowing passengers to explore the island. The ship departed on Sunday afternoon, prompting a search operation when Ms. Rees was reported missing. A helicopter conducted an aerial search while the ship’s crew assisted in scouring the island.
Mark Fifield, the CEO of Coral Expeditions, confirmed the tragic incident, expressing regret over the situation and pledging full support to Ms. Rees’ family. The company is cooperating with authorities in the ongoing investigation, refraining from further comments at this time.
Authorities are treating Ms. Rees’ death as sudden and non-suspicious. Tourism Tropical North Queensland conveyed condolences to the family and is awaiting additional information as the investigation progresses. A comprehensive report will be prepared for the coroner.
