“Foreign Secretary Urges Swift Aid Access in Gaza”

The Foreign Secretary emphasized the urgent need for aid in Gaza, urging Israel to remove restrictions on crucial supplies without delay. Yvette Cooper is set to visit Jordan to witness the hold-up of essential aid at the border, including British-funded aid awaiting entry into the conflict-ridden area.

Expressing concern, Ms. Cooper stressed, “The people of Gaza cannot endure any further delays.” During her inaugural trip to the Middle East as Foreign Secretary, she is advocating for the removal of obstacles hindering vital supplies, aiming to expedite the delivery process.

While in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Ms. Cooper highlighted the pressing need for aid access, citing instances of severe famine and malnutrition among children. She emphasized the importance of accelerating the delivery of aid, particularly aid allocated by the UK and held up in Jordan.

Discussions between the Foreign Secretary and Saudi officials focused on securing lasting peace post-ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. Ms. Cooper emphasized the fragility of the ceasefire and the collective effort required to achieve a just and enduring peace, centered around a two-state solution for Israel and Palestine.

During her engagements in Saudi Arabia, Ms. Cooper interacted with volunteers at the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre to address the reconstruction of Gaza’s healthcare infrastructure. She also participated in a traditional tea ceremony with prominent Saudi women at a female-only Majlis in the King Abdullah Financial District.

In Jordan, Ms. Cooper is expected to announce a £6 million funding initiative for critical healthcare services for women, including emergency birth kits, as many women in Gaza face giving birth outside hospitals weekly. Discussions with Jordanian leaders will also revolve around the ceasefire and reconstruction efforts in the region.

The Foreign Secretary’s agenda includes visits to schools and hospitals in Jordan, focusing on the care of children evacuated from Gaza for NHS treatment in the UK. Additionally, she will observe the training of Palestinian security forces based in the West Bank.
