“Infant Battles Rare Eye Cancer: Family Rallies for Hope”

A mother was deeply affected by a distressing diagnosis concerning her infant son’s eye. Oliver Furnival, an eight-month-old from Bootle, caught his mother Olivia Hannaford’s attention with his right eye looking different from his left since birth. Olivia noticed that his right eye seemed less focused compared to the left, along with what she described as a peculiar ‘glow’ in that eye.

Concerned about her son’s eye condition, Olivia sought advice from her health visitor when Oliver turned four months old. Together, they arranged an appointment at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, hoping it might be a simple case of needing glasses. However, upon returning from a brief absence, Olivia became even more troubled by the changes in Oliver’s eye, particularly noting a pronounced glow when he was tired.

After contacting Alder Hey again and sending them photos of Oliver’s eye, Olivia eventually met with medical professionals at Broadgreen Hospital. To her dismay, Oliver was diagnosed with retinoblastoma, a rare eye cancer affecting young children, with only a small number of cases reported annually in the UK.

Oliver is currently undergoing chemotherapy at a Birmingham hospital to address the cancer affecting his right eye. The NHS indicates that a key symptom of retinoblastoma is a white glow or reflection in the eye’s center, visible even in dim lighting or flash photography. Additional signs may include misaligned eyes.

The devastating news of Oliver’s diagnosis left Olivia and her partner, Tom Furnival, shocked and saddened. The family faces the possibility of Oliver losing his eye, a potential hereditary aspect of the illness. However, prompt medical attention likely averted such an outcome.

Olivia explained that the chemotherapy aims to shrink the tumor, leaving behind a calcified, inactive mass. While there is a chance of the cancer reoccurring if it is genetic, doctors are optimistic that it will remain localized in Oliver’s eye. The family hopes for the possibility of his retina reattaching in the future, but they are prepared for potential vision limitations.

Despite the challenges, Olivia finds solace in Oliver’s cheerful demeanor, describing him as a delightful and content baby. Throughout the ordeal, the family has received support from the Childhood Eye Cancer Trust, and a fundraising event is planned to raise awareness and funds for the charity.

Organized by Sefton OA, a football club where Tom coaches, the event will feature raffles and bingo, with tickets priced at £5. Set to take place on November 1 at The Silvestrian Club in Vauxhall, the fundraiser aims to provide vital support for children like Oliver diagnosed with retinoblastoma.
