Chilling surveillance video has been released, capturing the moment when Jihad Al-Shamie, the perpetrator of the Manchester synagogue attack, departed from his residence before carrying out the tragic incident.
The footage displays the 35-year-old driving away from his home in Prestwich, Manchester, in a black Kia Picanto, navigating through residential streets. Subsequently, Al-Shamie proceeded to Heaton Park Congregation Synagogue in the Crumpsall district of the city, where he deliberately rammed his vehicle into a volunteer guard and fatally stabbed a man. Following these events, the assailant was shot dead, and a worshipper was accidentally killed by police gunfire during the intervention.
Victims Adrian Daulby, 53, and Melvin Cravitz, 66, both residents of Crumpsall, lost their lives during the assault, which unfolded on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar. The individual who possessed the video footage, opting for anonymity, mentioned checking his security camera after witnessing police activity at Al-Shamie’s residence.
Expressing shock at the unfolding events, the footage owner relayed to Manchester Evening News: “You can observe him calmly driving along Langley Road and pausing before entering Bury Road. It’s disturbing to think about his intentions at that moment.”
Upon reaching the synagogue, Al-Shamie drove his car into a security guard stationed outside the premises, subsequently exiting the vehicle to carry out the fatal stabbing. The attacker donned a fake explosives vest, and responding armed officers swiftly neutralized him after public alerts. The assault resulted in the deaths of two worshippers and injuries to four others.
Reportedly a dropout from university, Al-Shamie, originally from Syria, acquired British citizenship in 2006 at around age 16, having arrived in the UK as a young child. At the time of the attack, he was on police bail for an alleged rape offense. During the incident, he professed allegiance to ISIS in a self-initiated emergency call.
A woman shared her harrowing experience of a three-year abusive relationship with Al-Shamie to the Manchester Evening News, highlighting his extremist views and attempts at ideological indoctrination. The woman recounted how he pressured her to align with his extremist beliefs, contrary to her upbringing and values.
