Naomi Osaka made a striking entrance at the Australian Open, catching everyone’s attention with her unique walkout ensemble that even left Tim Henman at a loss for words. The Japanese tennis sensation commenced her match against Croatian player Antonia Ruzic in style.
Before the match even began, Osaka’s presence was commanding as she stepped onto the court sporting a broad-brimmed hat, a veil, and a coordinating umbrella. Her outfit, complete with flared trousers, a teal jacket, and a vest combo, captivated the audience at the Rod Laver Arena.
Former British No 1, Laura Robson, commented, “It’s a vibe. I love it, this is a moment.” Tim Henman, on the other hand, expressed his admiration by saying he was “not qualified to comment” and added, “Wow, I am speechless. It’s pretty cool. Does it put pressure on your performance?”
Osaka revealed that her outfit was inspired by a jellyfish, a concept she conceived while reading with her daughter. In an interview with Vogue, she shared, “When I look back at the players who came before me, I think about how those moments—those looks—have become memories that live forever.”
She collaborated with designer Robert Wun to bring her vision to life. Wun shared his experience, stating, “Naomi and Martin came into it with a great understanding of what my world already looks like. As a fan, I already understood her as an athlete, but being able to share this creative moment has been incredibly special.”
During her opening game, the drama continued as Osaka’s match with Ruzic was halted in the second set due to a technical issue with the net lights. After a significant delay, both players refused to continue until the problem was resolved. TNT Sports commentator Naomi Broady noted the players’ reluctance to play with the faulty lights.
Osaka eventually secured her spot in the second round by defeating Ruzic 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. She is set to face Romanian star Sorana Cîrstea in the next round on Thursday.
