Ofsted’s head inspector faced criticism for suggesting that the organization does not add extra pressure on schools and educators. Martyn Oliver informed parliament that the new evaluation system by Ofsted would not escalate workloads, despite concerns raised by teachers.
Recently, the education watchdog introduced revamped assessment reports to grade schools based on various factors like attendance, behavior, and inclusivity using a color-coded five-point scale. This move, set to take effect next month, was strongly opposed by education unions, citing increased stress on school staff.
During a session with the education select committee, Sir Martyn defended the grading system, emphasizing that it aligns with existing standards and can be adapted easily with evolving reforms, guidelines, or legislation for schools.
However, Daniel Kebede, General Secretary of the National Education Union, expressed skepticism, stating that Sir Martyn’s stance does not reassure the profession about the system’s effectiveness in improving conditions. Kebede highlighted concerns about the impact on workload and well-being, emphasizing the discrepancy between Ofsted’s claims and the actual experiences reported by members.
In a different development, Ofsted discontinued issuing one-word judgments for overall school performance following a tragic incident involving headteacher Ruth Perry’s suicide. Perry took her life in 2023 after her school’s rating was downgraded from “outstanding” to “inadequate” due to safeguarding issues.
Sir Martyn also raised alarms about vulnerable children residing in unregistered and unregulated children’s homes. Data revealed that a significant number of local authorities utilized such facilities in the past year, prompting concerns about the lack of adequate regulated homes to cater to complex needs. Sir Martyn expressed a desire to eliminate unregistered homes but acknowledged the challenges in doing so immediately.
