A woman shared her harrowing experience of being stalked by a former colleague who broke into her home and stole her diary, all caught on a Ring doorbell camera. Grace Hallam, featured in Channel 4’s “Catching My Stalker,” faced terror when Karl Chads, a man she barely knew, turned obsessive and abusive after meeting on a train ride from Birmingham in May 2023.
Despite limited prior interaction, Grace, then based in Watford and in a committed relationship, found Chads unsettling during work communication but seemingly friendly during their train journey. Their paths crossed again at a work event where Chads made inappropriate remarks, leading Grace to feel uncomfortable.
Following Chads’ persistent messages and inappropriate advances, Grace reported him to the police and her employer. However, he continued to contact her, escalating to threats and intrusive actions. The situation reached a peak when Chads broke into Grace’s home, causing significant damage and stealing personal belongings.
Grace and her boyfriend took measures to protect themselves, including installing a doorbell camera. Chads’ behavior escalated further when he threatened violence and committed burglary and criminal damage. Eventually, Chads was arrested and faced multiple charges related to stalking and violence against Grace and her partner.
After a trial, Chads was found guilty and sentenced to over eight years in prison. He was also placed on the sex offenders register and issued a restraining order. Grace expressed the profound impact of Chads’ actions on her life and mental well-being.
In response to the case, Detective Constable Honeybell emphasized the severity of Chads’ actions and commended the substantial sentence imposed. Hertfordshire Police acknowledged shortcomings in their initial response and highlighted efforts to enhance their handling of stalking cases, including improved training and protocols.
