Rahim el-Habache is getting ready in a closet at the St Mellons Community Hub in Cardiff, transforming into his belly-dancing attire. Amidst cleaning supplies, his costume and accessories are stored alongside typical cleaning items. Rahim and fellow performer Liana Harding, known as ‘Shirley Classy,’ are set to entertain at the ‘Posh Club,’ a unique arts event catering to seniors across the UK.
St Mellons, situated in the east of Cardiff, is a community with a predominantly white, working-class population, grappling with economic challenges. Rahim, a 32-year-old artist, fled Morocco due to persecution against the LGBTQ+ community. On the other hand, Liana, aged 76, hails from the multicultural Tiger Bay community.
The visit of these two performers to St Mellons is featured in the third installment of the ‘Island of Strangers’ film by the Daily Mirror, exploring societal divisions in the UK. The event highlights ongoing struggles for LGBTQ+ rights and issues such as trans rights and anti-drag protests. The Posh Club, known for its flamboyant entertainment, offers a vibrant space for older individuals to enjoy food, drinks, and performances.
Common/Wealth, a local theater group, organizes the Posh Club events in St Mellons, providing a much-needed social outlet for seniors facing isolation and financial difficulties. Guests like Linda and Alan found companionship at the event, emphasizing the importance of community engagement for older individuals.
Rahim’s participation in the Posh Club performances has been a personal journey of self-discovery and acceptance. Having left Morocco and seeking asylum in the UK, Rahim found solace in groups like Glitter Cymru, which offer support to LGBTQ+ people of color. Through his performances, Rahim sheds the societal pressures he once carried, embracing his true identity.
As the event progresses, Liana captivates the audience with her performance, while Rahim leads the crowd in belly dancing, fostering inclusivity and breaking stereotypes. Rahim views the Posh Club as a platform to bridge generational gaps and challenge misconceptions about diversity and older generations.
The Posh Club serves as a testament to the power of community acceptance and inclusivity, showcasing the joy and connection it brings to individuals like Rahim. Through his art, Rahim aims to inspire others and promote understanding among diverse communities.
