A recent study conducted by mathematician Bobby Seagull has unveiled the key factors contributing to a successful long-distance relationship among university students. Analyzing data from 1,000 individuals aged 18-30 involved in long-distance relationships during their university years, the study developed a formula that balances the efforts invested by couples with the challenges they encounter. The formula indicates that a higher Long-Distance Love index corresponds to a greater likelihood of relationship success.
On average, participants in these relationships only saw their partners three times a month, traveling approximately 171.3 miles per visit. The study revealed that these couples spend about £170 monthly on travel expenses to meet their significant others, with 85% expressing a desire for more affordable travel options to increase visit frequency.
While 30% would choose to drive and 27% opt for the bus, the majority of journeys (72%) were completed by train. Sarah Rosier, customer experience director for National Express, which sponsored the research, emphasized the challenges of maintaining a long-distance relationship while balancing academic and personal commitments.
The research identified factors such as distance traveled, frequency of communication through texts and calls, and expressions of love as crucial elements in maintaining a successful long-distance relationship. Participants reportedly sent an average of 68 messages and had four phone conversations daily. Despite occasionally missing classes, 72% of respondents confirmed the longevity of their long-distance relationships.
According to participants, regular communication through calls and texts, along with the understanding that physical separation is temporary, are crucial for relationship success. Bobby Seagull emphasized the importance of adhering to the formula for a higher chance of relationship success. Sarah added that with convenient coach services available, students can manage their budgets effectively while nurturing their long-distance relationships.
