A small aircraft has crashed in the coastal region of Kwale, Kenya, with reports indicating that 12 individuals are feared to have lost their lives. The incident occurred as the plane was en route to the Maasai Mara National Reserve, crashing in a hilly area approximately 25 miles from Diani airstrip.
According to Kwale County Commissioner Stephen Orinde, the passengers aboard the aircraft were all foreign tourists, although their nationalities are yet to be officially confirmed. The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority has initiated an investigation to determine the cause of the crash.
The distinction between crew members and passengers remains unclear at this time. The aircraft is said to have crashed shortly after takeoff, igniting into flames and resulting in a charred wreckage at the crash site. Witnesses described hearing a loud explosion and discovering unidentifiable human remains upon arrival.
Mombasa Air Safari, the airline involved, stated that they are working closely with aviation authorities and will provide updates on the situation as per regulatory protocols. The Maasai Mara National Reserve, known for its annual wildebeest migration from the Serengeti in Tanzania, is a renowned tourist destination.
