“UK To Embrace Denmark’s Immigration Tactics”

Shabana Mahmood is preparing to unveil significant changes to the immigration regulations in the UK, taking inspiration from Denmark’s policies. The Home Secretary recently sent officials to Denmark to observe their stringent border control and asylum procedures, known for being some of the strictest in Europe.

Denmark’s approach includes tightening rules on family reunions and limiting certain refugees to temporary stays, leading to a notable decrease in asylum applications over the past 40 years and a high rate of successful removals of rejected asylum seekers. This move has divided Labour MPs, with some supporting stricter measures to counter Reform UK, while others fear losing voters to the Green Party and the Liberal Democrats.

Ms. Mahmood aims to deter unauthorized entry into the UK while streamlining the process of deporting individuals without a legal right to remain in the country. She is eager to meet with Denmark’s immigration minister, Rasmus Stoklund, to discuss further collaboration.

Mr. Stoklund previously likened Danish society to the peaceful and harmonious lifestyle of hobbits in “The Lord of the Rings,” emphasizing the expectation for newcomers to contribute positively to the community.

In response to the proposed changes, Stoke-on-Trent Central Labour MP Gareth Snell expressed openness to exploring reforms that enhance fairness in the asylum system. He emphasized the importance of learning from successful immigration management strategies implemented by sister parties worldwide.

On the other hand, Nottingham East MP Nadia Whittome, a member of the Socialist Campaign Group caucus, cautioned against adopting the Danish model, labeling it as aligned with far-right ideologies and unsuitable for a Labour government.

Recent Home Office data revealed that 648 migrants arrived in the UK via the Channel on Friday, bringing the year’s total crossings to 38,223. To stay updated on valuable news, consider selecting Daily Mirror as a ‘Preferred Source’ on Google News.
