A woman was forced to quit her job due to a gym-related accident that led to a severe spinal condition. Jess Helling experienced back pain after falling during a competition at a health club, resulting in multiple hospital visits over eight months. An MRI scan revealed a bulging disc, and despite receiving painkillers, her condition deteriorated. Subsequent medical examinations led to a diagnosis of cauda equina syndrome, a critical condition involving compressed nerves in the lower back.
Following emergency decompression surgery, Jess continues to endure persistent back pain, weakness in her right leg affecting mobility, and issues with bowel and bladder functions. Her symptoms led to her resignation from her position as an operating department practitioner. Jess shared her distressing journey to raise awareness for Cauda Equina Awareness Day on October 16.
Legal action is being pursued by Jess with the assistance of medical negligence lawyers to investigate potential early detection lapses and obtain specialized rehabilitation. She highlighted the importance of recognizing the signs of cauda equina syndrome and the support available to individuals facing similar challenges.
Jess has received aid from Cauda Equina Champions and organized fundraising events to support the charity and the North West Regional Spinal Injuries Centre. Despite the hardships she faced, she remains determined to raise awareness and provide hope to others dealing with similar conditions. Symptoms of cauda equina syndrome include lower back pain, leg weakness, bladder and bowel dysfunction, and numbness or tingling sensations.
