Father of Four Takes Own Life Amid Council Dispute

A devoted father of four tragically ended his own life following what his family described as immense stress and hardship caused by actions of the local authority, an official inquiry revealed.

Alistair Taylor, aged 34, had been operating a successful barbershop for several years until Blackpool Council abruptly terminated his lease at a local market, compelling him to relocate his business.

Subsequently, he was notified by the council that they planned to acquire his family home through a Compulsory Purchase Order to develop a new education campus. This news was devastating for Alistair, who had tailored the house to cater to the special needs of his two disabled children.

During the inquest held at Blackpool Town Hall on October 17, it was disclosed that various factors had contributed to his declining mental health. Coroner Alan Wilson highlighted the loss of his business and home as significant triggers that worsened his mental well-being, emphasizing the council’s lack of understanding of the potential impact on Alistair and his family.

Moreover, the inquest revealed Alistair’s increasing vulnerability due to his exposure to negative influences on social media in the lead-up to his death, which had strained his marriage. The inquiry disclosed that Alistair and his wife were separated, with their relationship under considerable strain. The situation escalated during a difficult interaction with his wife shortly before the tragic incident where Alistair took his own life on October 4.

His father expressed that Alistair had faced severe stress and adversity from the local authority in the period preceding his death. The family recounted how Alistair was caught off guard when the council acquired the market where his barbershop thrived, abruptly ending his lease without prior notice.

Following the loss of his lease, he was informed that the council intended to purchase his residence in 2022 to construct a new education facility, despite him adapting the property to accommodate his disabled children’s requirements.

Discussions about securing a new home for Alistair’s family were ongoing when he tragically decided to end his life, leaving the matter unresolved.

Alistair’s family underscored the prolonged distress and lack of support they endured in the final years leading to his death, exacerbated by the uncertainty surrounding their housing situation. They criticized the council for offering inadequate compensation and causing prolonged stress, isolation, and despair for Alistair.

Alistair’s relentless efforts to rebuild his business from scratch after losing his lease had taken a toll on him, with his family emphasizing the need for immediate support and suitable housing solutions during times of significant life changes.

The family’s legal representative urged the council to reflect on the detrimental impact on Alistair and his family, emphasizing the necessity for adequate mental health support when imposing drastic changes on residents like home demolitions.

In response, Cllr Lynn Williams, the Leader of Blackpool Council, expressed condolences to Alistair’s family and committed to reviewing the findings to learn from the situation for future projects.
