A man, Aren Pearson, has been sentenced to life in prison for murdering his girlfriend, Claire Leveque, by stabbing her at least 26 times in a remote Scottish island home. The tragic incident occurred in the Sandness area of Shetland on February 11, 2024. The court heard that Pearson, 41, inflicted 19 of the stab wounds on Claire’s face and neck.
Both Pearson and Claire, originally from Canada, had relocated to Scotland in 2023. Pearson’s brutal attack on Claire marked the culmination of a pattern of domestic abuse that he had subjected her to, despite claiming to love her.
After the assault, Pearson admitted to emergency services and medical personnel that he had fatally wounded Claire. Tragically, Claire was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders. Pearson attempted to evade capture by driving his Porsche off the road and into the sea at Melby Pier before being apprehended upon his return to the house.
During the trial, Pearson falsely claimed that Claire had self-inflicted the stab wounds, causing distress to Claire’s family members who had traveled from North America to hear the heart-wrenching details of her injuries. Despite his denial, Pearson was convicted of murder and assaulting Claire in the months leading up to her death. He received a life sentence with a minimum term of 25 years behind bars.
Throughout the proceedings, harrowing details emerged, including a chilling 999 call made by Pearson’s mother, Hazel, who reported the incident. Hazel described Pearson’s increasingly violent behavior in the weeks leading up to the tragedy and the gruesome scene in the hot tub where Claire was found.
In his defense, Pearson’s solicitor advocate acknowledged the gravity of the crime and expressed Pearson’s remorse for his actions. The court heard that psychological evaluations found no evidence of mental illness in Pearson.
Following the verdict, law enforcement officials condemned Pearson’s actions, highlighting the severity of the violence he inflicted on Claire and the toxic nature of their relationship. The authorities emphasized their commitment to supporting the community and combatting violence against women to ensure a safer environment for all residents in Shetland.
In the wake of the conviction, Hope Ingram fondly remembered Claire as a vibrant and lively individual who cherished life. She expressed relief that justice had been served and vowed to honor Claire’s memory by embracing life to the fullest.
