Chinese e-commerce giant JD.com has introduced its new Joybuy platform in the UK to compete with major players like Amazon. The company, valued at £30 billion, offers a wide range of products including technology, appliances, beauty items, groceries, and more, featuring popular brands like Apple, LEGO, Samsung, and L’Oréal.
Joybuy is providing next-day delivery for orders over £29 in London and several other cities such as Birmingham, Leicester, Nottingham, Oxford, and Cambridge, reaching a total of 17 million residents. Additionally, the platform offers a same-day “Double 11” delivery service for orders placed by 11 am, ensuring delivery by 11 pm. JD.com has established its own logistics network with distribution centers in Milton Keynes and Luton.
The company’s expansion into the UK market follows its withdrawal from negotiations to acquire prominent British retail brands in recent years. JD.com explored potential deals to purchase Currys in 2024 and engaged in talks regarding a takeover of Argos from Sainsbury’s last September, which did not materialize.
Joybuy UK’s Managing Director, Matthew Nobbs, expressed confidence in the company’s growth prospects in the UK, emphasizing a long-term commitment to the market. He highlighted the importance of providing an exceptional customer experience through continuous improvement of their web and app platforms.
In addition to the UK launch, JD.com is set to expand its presence in Germany, the Netherlands, France, Belgium, and Luxembourg. The company sealed a significant 2.2 billion euro (£1.9 billion) acquisition deal for the Germany-based electronics retail group Ceconomy last year.
