British Citizens Sue Johnson & Johnson Over Talc Cancer

Thousands of British citizens are initiating legal proceedings against the pharmaceutical company Johnson and Johnson, alleging that the firm knowingly distributed talcum powder contaminated with asbestos in the United Kingdom. Around 3,000 individuals claim to have developed ovarian cancer or mesothelioma due to their use of Johnson’s Baby Powder and are now pursuing compensation through the High Court in London.

Legal representatives for the group have filed court documents asserting that Johnson and Johnson (JandJ), as well as its current and former subsidiaries Johnson and Johnson Management and Kenvue UK, should be held responsible. They claim that JandJ concealed the risks associated with their product for many years and have only recently switched to using corn starch instead of talc in their baby powder in the UK starting in 2023.

A spokesperson for Kenvue, previously under the JandJ umbrella, has defended the quality of the talc used in the baby powder, stating that it complies with regulations, is asbestos-free, and does not pose a cancer risk. Talc is a naturally occurring mineral sourced from the earth.

According to Michael Rawlinson KC, the legal representative for the claimants, very few talc deposits worldwide are free from asbestos, and all mines supplying Johnson and Johnson contained asbestos. He alleges that reports from these mines, along with existing scientific literature, would have alerted JandJ to the asbestos contamination issue.

Despite this knowledge, Mr. Rawlinson claims that Johnson and Johnson hid information indicating asbestos contamination in their baby powder and actively sought to downplay the health risks by influencing regulators and funding studies. This conduct, he argues, was aimed at safeguarding the company’s reputation and financial interests associated with their product.

Janet Fuschillo, one of the claimants, disclosed her long-time use of JandJ’s baby powder since the 1960s and her subsequent ovarian cancer diagnosis. She expressed her distress at unknowingly exposing herself and her children to a potentially harmful substance.

Another claimant, Patricia Angell, shared the story of her late husband, Edward, who passed away from mesothelioma shortly after diagnosis. She revealed that despite his meticulous hygiene practices, he regularly used Johnson and Johnson talc, believing it to be safe and pure.

Mesothelioma, a cancer linked to asbestos exposure, is primarily caused by inhaling asbestos fibres, as explained by the NHS. Mr. Rawlinson highlighted the inhalation risk associated with applying talcum powder, particularly in aerosolized form, which can linger in the air and be breathed in by users.

In response, a spokesperson for Kenvue expressed sympathy for individuals affected by cancer and emphasized the safety of Johnson’s Baby Powder, citing extensive testing by reputable laboratories and health authorities globally. They affirmed that the talc used in the product met regulatory standards, was asbestos-free, and did not pose a cancer threat.
