“Millions Eligible for Up to £300 Winter Fuel Payment, Potential Repayment”

Millions of individuals nationwide stand to receive additional financial aid of up to £300, but there is a possibility of repayment. The Winter Fuel Payment, designed for most individuals born before September 22, 1959, provides support ranging from £100 to £300 to help cover energy expenses.

Eligibility for this program extends to those receiving various benefits, including the State Pension and Pension Credit. However, if an individual’s total income exceeds £35,000, HMRC may seek reimbursement of the Winter Fuel Payment.

HMRC has outlined that any repayments up to £300 could be collected by adjusting the tax code for the 2026/27 tax year or including the amount in the 2025/26 Self Assessment tax return where applicable. The evaluation of income will be done on a case-by-case basis.

In a scenario where one household member earns £30,000 annually and another earns £40,000, the individual with income below £35,000 will retain their share of the Winter Fuel Payment, while the higher earner will need to repay it.

To determine if repayment is necessary, the government offers a free online tool for income verification. By entering personal details, residence location, date of birth, and sources of taxable income, individuals can check their eligibility.

The tool requires input on income sources and amounts earned from each. If the total income surpasses £35,000, HMRC will indicate that the Winter Fuel Payment must be repaid.

Furthermore, the tool provides guidance on the repayment process. For instance, self-employed individuals earning over £35,000 who file a Self-Assessment tax return may be informed that the payment does not need to be included in the 2024/25 tax return due by January 31, 2026.

Individuals who missed the deadline to opt out of the Winter Fuel Payment for the 2025/26 cycle will have to wait for HMRC to reclaim the sum. However, those expecting income above £35,000 in the next cycle can choose to opt out early by contacting the Winter Fuel Payment Centre before March 31, 2026, via phone or mail to express their decision.
