Wes Streeting has criticized the doctors’ union for pushing for increased salaries funded by others ahead of an upcoming strike. The Health Secretary expressed frustration with the British Medical Association, accusing them of operating like a cartel. BMA resident doctors are set to commence a five-day strike on Friday, coinciding with discussions around potential tax hikes in the upcoming budget.
During his address at the NHS Providers annual conference in Manchester, Streeting emphasized the financial constraints faced by the NHS and the need for equitable choices. He highlighted the resistance from the BMA consultants and pensions committees to higher taxes, suggesting they are advocating for external parties to bear the burden of increased doctor salaries.
Streeting warned that the BMA’s actions jeopardize the NHS’s future and asserted that the government would not yield to their demands. He criticized the union’s behavior, stating they no longer represent the best interests of doctors professionally.
Amid preparations for the strike, Streeting and NHS England chief Jim Mackey instructed hospitals to maintain essential services. Streeting reaffirmed the government’s commitment to enhancing the NHS despite the ongoing dispute with the BMA.
Streeting made a final plea to resident doctors to call off the strike, emphasizing the government’s dedication to ensuring continuity of healthcare services. Despite the BMA’s request for a pay increase to counter salary erosion since 2008, Streeting stood firm on the current pay rates.
The strike, scheduled from November 14 to November 19, will impact hospital services, with numerous appointments expected to be postponed. Streeting highlighted recent pay increases for doctors and emphasized the government’s efforts to address key issues in the healthcare sector.
A spokesperson for the BMA defended their position, advocating for fair pay and job security for doctors. They called for constructive negotiations with the government to reach a mutually beneficial resolution on pay and job conditions.
