“NHS Warns: Check with Doctor Before Taking Ibuprofen”

Ibuprofen, an easily accessible over-the-counter medication, is widely stocked in pharmacies and supermarkets nationwide. This popular pain reliever is known for its effectiveness in alleviating various pains, swelling, and symptoms of colds, flu, and even Coronavirus.

However, it is important to recognize that ibuprofen may not be suitable for everyone. The NHS advises specific groups to consult a pharmacist or doctor before using this nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). These groups include individuals with a history of allergic reactions to ibuprofen, aspirin, or similar NSAIDs like naproxen, pregnant women, those with kidney issues, asthma, or stomach ulcers.

Official NHS guidelines highlight that individuals over 65 are at increased risk of stomach ulcers when taking ibuprofen long-term and may require additional medication to protect their stomachs. Typically, adults can take one or two 200mg ibuprofen tablets or capsules up to three times daily, with at least six hours between doses. Higher dosages should only be taken under medical supervision.

While ibuprofen is generally safe to use alongside paracetamol or codeine, it should not be combined with similar painkillers like aspirin and naproxen without consulting a doctor. If prescribed these medications, individuals should seek medical advice before using ibuprofen.

For more detailed information on ibuprofen, individuals can refer to the NHS website. Additionally, paracetamol, like ibuprofen, may not be suitable for everyone. The NHS recommends consulting a doctor before taking paracetamol, although most individuals aged 16 and above can use it, including pregnant or breastfeeding individuals.

Further guidance on paracetamol can be found on the NHS website.
