NATO forces successfully intercepted an unidentified drone that was observed near a US military base in Estonia, close to the Russian border. The incident occurred at Camp Reedo, a US Army Europe and Africa base, less than 30 miles from Russia, amidst heightened tensions due to Russia’s actions in Ukraine.
Reports indicate that two drones were sighted in the vicinity, with one being neutralized, although the involvement of US forces remains unconfirmed. The event occurred on October 17 but was only recently disclosed. Estonian Defense Forces headquarters spokesperson, Liis Vaksmann, confirmed the detection of drones near the military base, with one being taken down using an anti-drone rifle.
Following the incident, Estonian authorities conducted a search for the downed drone without success. Recent airspace violations by Russian MiG-31 fighters over Estonian territory have raised concerns about security in the region. Estonia, considered one of NATO’s most vulnerable members to Russian threats, is supported by British troops stationed in the country as part of a NATO battlegroup under Operation Cabrit since 2017.
The US Army’s 5th Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment, an armored reconnaissance unit, is stationed at the Reedo base. Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna emphasized the need for NATO to be ready to intercept and bring down aircraft trespassing sovereign airspace to defend the collective borders of the alliance.
Tsahkna highlighted the importance of a clear message to deter future violations, including the interception and downing of intruding aircraft when necessary. The incident coincided with Ukrainian strikes on Russian facilities, causing significant damage to oil and petrochemical installations, exacerbating petrol price increases and supply shortages in Russia.
Notable targets included the ATAN oil depot in Hvardiiske, a power plant in Simferopol, the Mari Refinery in Yoshkar-Ola, and the NS-Oil Refinery in Novospassk. Additionally, strikes on the Stavrolen chemical plant in Budyonnovsk and a power plant in Podilsk, Odesa region, were reported. The ongoing Ukrainian campaign to bomb oil plants has contributed to Russia’s current challenges in the energy sector.
The incident underscores the escalating tensions in the region and the need for a unified response to safeguard NATO’s borders and deter hostile actions.
